money_bags[1].pngNEW GRANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR
         GREEN INITIATIVES
(BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES)

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has recently announced a new annual grant entitled Illinois Green Infrastructure Grant (IGIG) . The grant will be available to local units of government as well as other organizations. IGIG will grant funds for projects which implement Green Technologies and Best Management Practices in three distinct categories. These three categories are:

1. Storm Water Retention and Infiltration

  • Storm Water Retention and Infiltration projects will include construction of infiltration basins, bio-retention ponds, wetland ponds, and other detention/retention structures which are designed to limit discharge of polluted runoff.
  • The IEPA plans to award 18 Storm Water Retention and Infiltration Grants a year; grants will range from $100,000 to $750,000. The minimum local match requirement will be 25%.

2. Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Rehabilitation

  • Projects considered for the CSO rehabilitation grant have to be located within combined sewer areas (areas that have sewers which carry both storm water runoff and sanitary sewerage in the same sewer). Likely requirements will include the construction of detention/retention facilities with green technologies to reduce storm water discharge into the combined sewers.
  • The IEPA will likely be awarding 10 grants a year in this category ranging from $300,000 to $3,000,0000. The minimum local match requirement will be 15%.

3. Small Projects

  • The IEPA anticipates granting 13 small projects a year. These small projects will be smaller scale construction projects which will include best management practice design within their proposed storm water management systems.
  • The grants will range from $15,000-$75,000. The minimum local match requirement will be 25%.

Grant proposals are due to the IEPA by December 15, 2010. See the link below for further details.

LIGHTHOUSE POINTE PARK (Frankfort Square Park District)
The Lighthouse Pointe Park Project included the development of an approximate 6 acre parcel of land which was donated to the Frankfort Square Park District by the developer of the adjacent residential subdivision. The project’s Landscape Architect Brusseau Design Group designed thelighthouse pointe.jpg new playground, shelter area, as well as the butterfly garden and rock outcropping area.  The site’s hilly terrain allowed W-T Civil Engineering to design a bike path system which will provide local bicyclers an enjoyable ride through the park.

Several site-engineering challenges created unique civil design opportunity for W-T Civil Engineering, LLC.  These distinctive civil design attributes include:

  • Bio-Swale coordination
  • Wetland Preservation
  • ADA Accessibility Design

VALPARAISO UNIVERSITY CAREER FAIR 2010
In September Todd Abrams and Josh St. Clair of W-T Civil Engineering attended their fifth Annual Valparaiso University Career Fair in Valparaiso, Indiana. Both Todd Abrams and Josh St. Clair are Valparaiso University Alumni.  The Career Fair was held in the University’s student union which opened in spring, 2009. The W-T Civil Engineering representatives met students and discussed potential opportunities for summer internships and co-op positions at W-T Civil Engineering in the upcoming year.
