SPRING-GURRIE SCHOOL IN LA GRANGE

W-T Civil Engineering is proud to be chosen by DLA Architects to assist with the design of the proposed Summer of 2011 improvements at Spring Gurrie School in LaGrange. The site improvements include building additions, substantial parking lot improvements (expansion), infrastructure improvements and public water main looping. The site is located within a combined sewer area, meaning that the storm water and sanitary sewerage both flow through the same pipes, which is not environmentally friendly. This is true because, in low flow conditions, the sanitary treatment plant needs to treat stormwater and, in high flow conditions, sanitary sewerage is allowed to bypass the treatment plant and flow directly into the receiving water body. As a part of this project, by allowing some stormwater to pond up on site and diverting the vast majority of sanitary sewerage and stormwater into separate systems, the combined sewerage flow was reduced by 95% and the stormwater flow was reduced by 12%.In addition, the expansion of the parking lot allowed for 75% more parking spaces (115 vs 65), which will allow for less on street parking.

CRAIGS LIST OF DIRT

This edition of the Craigs List of Dirt is dedicated to Dennis Gene Flanagin, who passed away on Friday April 29, 2011.  Dennis was very involved in the Park District Community including Commissioner for the Lan-Oak Park District & numerous positions with the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD).  In addition to this, Dennis was heavily involved with Flanagin Brothers, Inc., one of the major earthwork contractors in the Chicagoland area that we coordinate earthwork needs with.

Anyone need some dirt?  Seriously!  Even though we use the latest software to estimate earthwork and try to balance all sites, sometimes it is not possible.  For example, did you know that, on average, 4,000 cubic yards (400-500 trucks) of earth is excavated from one synthetic turf football field?  Not many schools have enough unused space to keep that much material on site.  Whether you need to remove excess soils or haul in soils in order to raise a site to desired elevation, earthwork is a huge cost to many Civil Engineering projects.  We have contacts in the earthwork business and coordinate with them constantly in order to provide our clients with the most economical solution to their earthwork needs.  The theory is that, from an environmental standpoint as well as a financial standpoint for both parties, it would be a shame if two nearby projects could help provide materials / a place to move it to but instead hauled material long distances just because they weren’t aware of one another.  Just like with the real Craigslist, we hope that the “Craigslist of dirt” can help to make that connection easier.  Please note that most of these projects were not designed by W-T.  We will gladly list your needs / excesses if you just let me know what you have, how much you have and when you need it.

This edition’s featured earthwork opportunities:

20,000 cy of black topsoil in the Homewood-Flossmoor area

Need 30,000 cy of material in Lake County this spring

100,000 cy clay & 50,000 peat in Lake County in late 2011

25,000 cy of C-DOT approved material in NW Indiana now

20,000 cy of sandy loam on south side now

1,500 cy of dredged material plus asphalt grindings in Elk Grove area in Summer 2011
